The default good life works very well but it worries secular philosophers. The human experience isn't just "flat" and ordinary: work, family, health, wealth, longevity, ease, no pain. Notice there is nothing soulish about the default good life. More, ordinary good life has fallen into the pit of insatiability - we want more and we don't know how to stop (Eccl. 1:7,8). Jesus says the ordinary good life is "living by bread alone" (Luke 4:4). Not good. The biblical good life takes Psalm 23 as its starting place: "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want..." The more rounded good life is centered on simplicity and contentment.
